LAM MORRISON, THAILAND’S GUITAR KING, CELEBRATES FIRST ANNIVERSARY OF HIS PATTAYA ROCK CLUB, The Lam Morrison House of Rock, WITH THREE EVENTS MAY 1st, 2nd, 3rd & 4th
The long weekend of May 1-4, The Lam Morrison House of Rock celebrates it’s first anniversary as Pattaya’s Real Rock Club, with SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST: ONE YEAR - A Birthday Bash Rent Party Jam Session (Friday, 2 May); LAMSTOCK: 3 Daze of Piece & Music (Thursday, Friday, Saturday 1-3 May); and VIPs RE-UNITED (Sunday, 4 May).
That’s:
LAMSTOCK: 3 Daze of Piece & Music
Lam Morrison Plays the Music of Woodstock: Santana, Jimi Hendrix, Ten Years After, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Canned Heat and Country Joe & The Fish (”and it’s one, two, three, what are we fighting for…”).
Thursday - Saturday, 1-3 May 10pm - Late
SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST: ONE YEAR!
Birthday Bash Rent Party Jam Session
Friday, 2 May 10pm - Late
VIPs RE-UNITED
Lam Morrison Band with special guest, Ekamun
Sunday, 4 May 10pm - late

Why? Because it’s been a hell of a first year.
In one rough year for Pattaya, whence it seemed more Go Gos and Bar Beers shuttered than opened, while business fell off by as much as 30% and where amidst the “For Sale” signs and facade skeletons of Walking Street, Lam Morrison, Thailand’s Guitar King, opened and maintained (by performing incendiary nightly sets) Pattaya’s first real rock club, The Lam Morrison House of Rock.
After a few years of sporadic stints throughout Pattaya, most recently as a late night regular at The Blues Factory, Lam committed to his Australian partner, Paul Kelly, to build this club as his legacy, The Lam Morrison House of Rock.
Over this past year The Lam Morrison House of Rock has played host to, among others, Sek Loso, The Olarn Project, Ekamun, Pop The Sun, Rang Rockestra, Kitty Machine Gun, Neng & The Fying V All Stars, Momoko Futon, as Momokomotion and with Gene Mahasamut, Zyndy and the Rocketz, Hell’s Angels, Reggae’s Gold Red, Audy, Assajan Jakawan and, most every night at midnight rocking classic rock classically, Lam Morrison and his Trio (drummer Toy and bassist Toto).
Last year he opened the club two weeks after Songkran, just in time for Cobta Gold, and so this year, Lam will host a wild night of rockin’ fun on Friday, May Second, billed as SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST: Birthday Bash Rent Party Jam Session. An All Points Bulletin has been sent to Lam’s musician pals to join him in an old fashioned no-holds-barred jam session celebrating his and the club’s survival. (It’s billed tongue-in-cheek as a rent party [every night is actually a rent party]).
LAMSTOCK: 3 DAZE OF PIECE & MUSIC, is Lam’s interpretation of the music from the original 1969 Woodstock Festival: Each of the three nights, he will pay tributes to specific bands, ranging from his vast Hendrix repertoire (including “The Star Spangle Banner”) to the Creedence and Santana catalogs, to one time only renditions of rarities such as “Goin’ Home” by Albert Lee’s Ten Years After and Country Joe and the Fish’s “Feel Like I’m Fixin to Die Rag”.
The party weekend will culminate with VIPs Re-United, a rare meeting of the minds between the two active members of the Thai supergroup VIP. VIP was Thailand’s first Platinum Act, who sold a million albums even before their were record stores, when albums and cassettes were sold from side-of-the-road bus stops, newstands and gas stations. Ekamun, the drummer, still plays regularly at Bangkok’s Rock Pub and leads workshops for The Prart School of Music. He has played often at The Lam Morrison House of Rock, but mostly to replace Lam, not with Lam. This will be the pair’s first outing since they played at a televised tribute to Thailand’s King as part of last year’s major celebrations.
All this Spring, Lam Morrison, Thailand’s first rock star/ Thailand’s lost rock star, has celebrated his 50 Years of Rock.
Now 63, he was self-taught, listening to the radio at the age of 13, playing on a beat-up acoustic while tending the rice fields (and the buffalo). He left home to lead the best bands on the US GI Bases, tour Europe in the late 70s, sell millions in Thailand in the 80s, sign to EMI (at the bequest of Deep Purple’s Richie Blackmore), then disappear and reappear for much of the past 20 years as a rock n roll gypsy performing with pick up bands
But now with the opening of The Lam Morrison House of Rock, as well as Lam’s mid/late-life reinvigoration, Thailand’s Guitar King is on nightly display for all to discover for the first time. Or savor for the Nth time.
Longtime devotees are amazed at his newfound vigor, stamina and reclaimed virtuosity.
That virtuosity will be demonstrated and celebrated May 1st through 4th, when The Lam Morrison House of Rock holds three distinct and cool anniversary events: Survival of the Fittest, The Birthday Bash Rent Party jam Session on Friday, the 2nd, LamStock, 3 Daze of Piece & Music staring on Thursday, the 1st, and VIPs Re-United on Sunday the 4th. Plan a long weekend in Pattaya next weekend at The Lam Morrison House of Rock.
The Lam Morrison House of Rock, located in South Pattaya, just off Walking Street on Funky Soi Marine (aka Soi Marine Plaza), has added a spark of life to the formerly dark alley between Soi Lucky Star and the so-called Arab Street. It’s in the Insomnia Disco Building across from Marine’s Open Air Seafood Restaurant, a stone’s throw from Coyotes and a dogleg turn out of Soi Lucky Star. Follow the rock. Or look for Lam’s bright red sports car and/or Paul and Toto and Toy’s Harleys. Or the now legendary CBGB & Yadong Stand, serving punk rock and new wave Thai herbal whiskey.
(By the way, The Lam Morrison House of Rock maintains a cordial relationship with its neighbor, The Blues Factory, sharing Pattaya’s growing audience for live music, which, on many nights, shuttles between the two clubs. And Lam still plays there for special occasions; and Blues Factory musicians jam on his stage. Lam hopes joint promotions will be forthcoming over the next year.)

On Sunday April 27th, The Lam Morrison House of Rock, Pattaya’s only real rock club, continues its INDIE SUNDAYS series by presenting Bangkok Noise Poppers ASSAJAN JAKAWAN.

ASSAJAN JAKAWAN, named after a Thai proverb or a Japanese cartoon (depending on which band member you ask), are hard to describe; but they play gentle pop songs with huge chaotic arrangements.

ASSAJAN JAKAWAN is a five piece rock combo with three guitars, bass and drums. Connecting shoe gazers with headbangers, their music is reminiscent of such bands as My Bloody Valentine, Sonic Youth and Love and Rockets, even Nine Inch Nails.

ASSAJAN JAKAWAN have risen to the top of the Bangkok underground, joining Goose and Jay Montonn and DeskTop Error and Slur, since they released a rocking sprawling six-song EP on So:On Dry Flowers Record in late 2006. They are currently at work on a full-length album.

ASSAJAN JAKAWAN debuted at The IDIOM FESTIVAL; performed at two Fat Festivals; headlined a Dude Sweet Party with label mates DeskTop Error; and are featured regularly on Bangkok’s Fat Radio. You can catch them most weekends at University student hangout La La Bar or at Soi Aree rent parties or at 808 on RCA or . . . in Pattaya.

ASSAJAN JAKAWAN will play three sets of originals and carefully chosen covers (for the 40-something expats in the audience) at their Pattaya show, the week before The Lam Morrison House of Rock celebrates its one year anniversary.

ASSAJAN JAKAWAN joins Sek Loso, The Olarn Project, Momoomotion, Gene Mahasmut, Reggae’s Gold Red, Zyndy and the Rockets, Neng and the Flying Vs, TVT, The Hells Agels, as well as many others, by playing this stage during this first year of The Lam Morriosn House of Rock.

Pattaya’s only real rock n roll club, The Lam Morrison House of Rock, is open every night 9.00pm till late, with Lam Morrison himself, Thailand’s Guitar King, on stage six nights a week ’round midnight.

On Friday May 2nd, The Lam Morrison House of Rock will celebrate its first anniversary with a special Survival of the Fittest Party. Details to follow.

The Lam Morrison House of Rock is located in South Pattaya just off Walking Street on funky Soi Marine (aka Soi Marine Plaza).

Celebrate 50 Years of Rock with Thailand’s Premiere Rock Star Lam Morrison

Lam Morrison will celebrate 50 Years of Guitar Playing Sunday, 30 March 2008, with a gala gig at Pattaya’s only real rock n roll club, The Lam Morrison House of Rock.

Lam will host and headline a celebration, which is being planned to feature many of Bangkok and Pattaya’s best guitarists.

The Guest of Honor, with his iconic machine gun-shaped guitar, will dazzle and wow an invited audience of local and regional dignitaries.

Open every night 9.00pm till late, with Lam on stage just after midnight , The Lam Morrison’s House of Rock is in South Pattaya just off Walking Street on funky Soi Marine.

Thailand’s most audacious guitarist began playing guitar when he was 13 years old (self-taught on a beat up acoustic while he tended the rice fields and the buffalo).

Now, Pi Lam, The Ajaan, teaches master classes in his often three-hour nighty spectacles at his South Pattaya namesake club. Longtime devotees are amazed at his newfound vigor, stamina and reclaimed virtuosity.

From the great generation that produced Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page and Keith Richards, Lam Morrison, their Thai brother, arose from Issarn’s rice paddies.

When the US troops brought their rock n roll records to Ubon Ratchatani while conducting America’s “Secret War” (see Air America), a young Lam avidly listened, eagerly learned and quickly formed Thailand’s first real rock band, VIP.

VIP toured all the US bases during the Viet Nam War. playing reasonable facsimiles of hits from The Stones, Chuck Berry, Jimi Hendrix, Canned Heat, Cream and The Doors (Lam jokingly refers to Jim Morrison as his brother).

After the war, Lam emigrated to Germany, where in a guitar duel (much reported at the time) he was dubbed “The Guitar King,” a moniker that he still defines.

He joined and formed bands, touring Germany, Austria, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, France and then over to North America and finally on to Austalia.

With the help of Richie Blackmore of Deep Purple, in the early 80’s he signed to EMI Records.

His debut album, Night in Bangkok, sold a cool million in Thailand. This was before there was Grammy Records or national distribution or even real record stores — basically, rock had been banned for years. His albums were sold at truck stops and gas stations. And a million were sold.

Since those glory days, Lam Morrison has been a rock n roll gypsy and South East Asia’s best kept secret.

He has spent the last two decades criss-crossing Thailand, from the restive south the golden north, occasionally stopping for residencies (Bangkok’s Rock Pub, Pattaya/s Blues Factory). He has shared stages with all of Thailand’s heirs to the throne from Micro to Olarn, from Ad Carabao to Sek Loso, two Thai music heroes who revere Lam Morrison as Thailand’s Guitar King.

He often returned to Europe and toured with such greats as Deep Purple and UFO and Richie Blackmore’s Rainbow.

Recently, he settled in Pattaya, but remained an enigma: You didn’t find Lam Morrison, Lam Morrison found you. He was a legend caught in brief flashes at bars up and down Walking Street, often just missed and more talked about than experienced.

The opening of The Lam Morrison House of Rock, as well as Lam’s mid/late-life reinvigoration, now means that the secret of Thailand’s guitar master is on nightly display for all to discover for the first time. Or savor for the Nth time.

The Lam Morrison House of Rock invites all to join them in celebrating Lam Morrison’s 50th Anniversary of Playing Guitar on Sunday, 30 March 2008, 9pm until late.

GENE MAHASAMUT AND MOMOKO UEDA WALK ON THE WILD SIDE AT LAM MORRISON ROCK CLUB IN PATTAYA, 20-23 MARCH 2008

The Lam Morrison House of Rock in South Pattaya presents WALK ON THE WILD SIDE, a musical tribute to Lou Reed and The Velvet Underground, performed by Gene Mahasamut (Saliva Bastards, Citizen Dog ) and Momoko Ueda (MomokoMotion, Futon) for four nights this March, Thursday the 20th through Sunday the 23rd, with shows nightly at 9:00 pm.

Over the past three months they have progressed from tinker toy covers to an hour-long performance piece. Gene and Momoko have built WALK ON THE WILDSIDE through workshops at The Cassette Cafe and weekly gigs at The La La Bar, both in Bangkok.

They have begun recording a self-produced CD of the music, and have augmented their Velvet’s material at recent shows with songs from Lou Reed’s solo career, Bob Dylan and The Rolling Stones.

She has performed recently at the Fat Festival and at Dude/Sweet, Tiger Translate and Soma parties , as well as as in Chiang Mai and Tokyo. In January she was Artist in residence at Bed Supperclub and is sponsored by Emily Is Strange.

Gene Mahasamut Boonyaruk, a graduate of London College of Printing, has starred in movies, most notably the acclaimed Citizen Dog directed by Wisit Sasanatieng. He is also an active member of Bangkok’s dek neow underground, fronting the garage rocking Saliva Bastards, as well as recently releasing a solo album, Little Fox (also available through Platinum Distribution). He is also featured in every BTS Station, currently, hawking Pepsi Max.

The Lam Morrison House of Rock is Pattaya’s only real rock bar.

THAI ROCK LEGEND LAM MORRISON OPENS PATTAYA ROCK CLUB SATURDAY 20 OCTOBER

WHO: LAM MORRISON, THAI ROCK LEGEND, AND MOMOKOMOTION, BANGKOK/TOKYO SENSATION

WHAT: HARD OPENING OF THE LAM MORRISON ROCK CLUB

WHEN: SATURDAY, 20 ROCKTOBER 2007 — 9PM UNTIL LATE

WHERE: THE LAM MORRISON ROCK CLUB, just off Walking Street in South Pattaya

WHY: BEEN A LONG TIME SINCE YOU ROCK N ROLLED Y’ALL

HOW: FOZEN MARGARITAS SPECIALS ALL NIGHT!!!

Rock and Roll’s new home in Pattaya, THE LAM MORRISON ROCK CLUB, announces an Open House Party, Its Hard Opening, featuring a special concert at midnight, Lam Morrison’s Tribute to The Doors, and two sets from Bangkok/Tokyo noisemakers MOMOKOMOTION, as well as film screenings on its two giant plasma screens and the best Frozen Margaritas East of Tijuana.

THE LAM MORRISON ROCK CLUB, is open every night 9.00pm till late,

THE LAM MORRISON ROCK CLUB is in South Pattaya just off Walking Street, where Soi Marine meets Soi Lucky Star

Opened by Thailand’s “Guitar King,” every night Lam Morrison hosts non-stop fun and entertainment with two live bands. rare videos, a fantastic DJ, drinks specials and a crowd comprised of the cognoscenti of Pattaya’s nightlife: other bar owners and knowledgeable locals, subtle demoiselles and rock n rollers, ex pats and lucky tourists. Those in the know start or end their night at THE LAM MORRISON ROCK CLUB.

Lam Morrison and his Pattaya Rock Stars takes over for a 90-minute set every night just after Midnight (to let it all hang out). His sets consist of free form covers of Zeppelin and Skynyrd, Prokofiev and Procal Harum, Jimi Hendrix and Axel Rose and originals and works from On Beyond Zebra.

Lam Morrison is a rock n roll gypsy. Lam Morrsion is South East Asia’s best kept secret. Lam Morrison is a living national treasure. Lam Morrison is all of the above.

From the great generation that produced Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Keef Richards and that other Morrison, Lam Morrison, their Thai brother, arose from new Siam’s inner cities by way of its rice paddies. Lam Morrison initially emerged in Issarn, a fully formed guitar god, in the afterhour clubs of clandestine USA air bases. His band was called VIP: VIP played psychedlic proto-metal for the Ravens of Air America. Pre-Traumatic Stress Syndrome.

Then during the 70’s while Thailand was under the censorious boot of one of its many juntas, Lam Morrison honed his art by relocating to Europe, forming bands and touring Germany, Austria, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, France and then over to North America and finally on to Austalia.

With the help of Richie Blackmore, in the early 80’s he signed to EMI. His debut album, Night in Bangkok, sold a cool million in Thailand. This was before there was Grammy Records or national distribution or even real record stores — all rock had been banned for over twenty years. His albums were sold at truck stops and gas stations. And a million were sold.

He has spent the last two decades criss-crossing Thailand, from the restive south the golden north, occasionally stopping for residencies (Bangkok’s Rock Pub, Pattaya/s Blues Factory). He has shared stages with UFO and Deep Purple as well as Ad Carabao and Sek Loso, two Thai music heroes who came up in his wake.

But he’s always been somewhat of an enigma — You didn’t find Lam Morrison, Lam Morrison found you. He was a legend more talked about than experienced. But now … Have you ever been experienced?

Now appearing. Nightly at Midnight. Lam Morrison’s Pattaya Rock Stars take over THE LAM MORRISON ROCK CLUB with a two hour show featuring ever-shifting sets of incendiary classic rock cover versions and roaring rock originals.

Located at the vortex of Pattaya — the Soi Lucky Star gateway just off Walking Street, Lam Morrison’s Rock Club i is at the center of the action, with the raciest A-Go-Gos next door, the late licensed sleepless disco Insomnia upstairs, buttressed by Turk Towns hookas on the left and the juicy oysters of late night al fresco Marine Market to the right.
